Abstract: 

Braids arise naturally in dynamics of surface maps being used to study forcing and linking of periodic orbits.  For an orientation-preserving homeomorphosm of the 2-disc, based on braid types and representations of braid groups, there are algorithms to find periodic orbits which are forced by and linked with a given one. On the other hand, for a symplectomorphism of the disc, one can determine if periodic orbits exist in a given braid class by using the Conley index theory on the discretized braid space. We overview these two theories and discuss their relations.
